Party Structure
Party Branch
A considerable amount of activity takes place at branch level. PLP members can take part in choosing branch officers and the candidate for the constituency. As a member you will be invited to attend policy forums throughout the year. These gatherings are intended for you to discuss party policy in a warm friendly environment. Each policy forum makes submissions to the party's Political and Platform Committees. This is where you can contribute to our next plan.
National General Council
This body is the Executive Authority of the Party. It is comprised of Stalwart Councillors, Constituency Council Representatives, Officers of the Party, Parliamentary Members of the Party, Trustees, Women's Branch representatives and representatives of the Progressive Young Liberals. The National General Council sets the party's objectives and oversees the running of the party nationally. Your Party Branch will choose people to serve on the National General Council.
The Political Committee
The Political Committee covers different aspects of policy such as health, crime, poverty, financial services, housing, consumer protection, the environment and foreign affairs. It is made up of representatives from the Platform Committee, the National General Council, Members of Parliament, the Chairman and the Secretary General. The Political Committee is also the executive arm of the National General Council.
National Convention
The National Convention is the ultimate authority in the party. The Convention decides the policy framework from which the next plan will be drawn and sets party rules. The Convention considers the policy papers prepared by the Political Committee and the papers prepared by the Platform Committee. Members choose delegates to the Convention - those delegates could include you.
